Many people are seeking a more meaningful and significant way to say goodbye. They want something different.

The American funeral industry has evolved into its present form over the past 150 years. Over the past several decades, funeral homes have been sprouting up all over. And today it is not unusual to hear about funeral homes either renovating an old house or building a new facility. However, a growing number of people are searching for a special way to honor those they love. They want something different for themselves and for their loved ones. They are often seeking a more meaningful and significant way to say goodbye.

Church & Community is a response to those people asking for a change. People need to be assured that funerals should be unique to each person because everyone is different and no one way is the right way.

At Church & Community the primary focus of a funeral is the family’s wishes and needs. The services are designed around family traditions and personal preferences, not a pre-existing notion of how things should be done. We recognize the incredible value of having funeral services at a place that holds personal meaning. So, instead of building or remodeling a facility, Church & Community offers families flexibility to design services that reflect the treasured memories of their loved one.

It is okay and often more appropriate and meaningful to move away from current practices of having all the services in a funeral home. It seems that churches and other community gathering centers offer a more meaningful setting for funeral services than using the local funeral home facility.

Many times a family simply chooses a funeral home because it is close to home. When people limit their search to just one funeral home they risk paying more than necessary for the funeral and more importantly narrowing their service choices. They ultimately may pay for things they do not need. Church & Community provides many options that focus on what a family wants without having them pay for those things they don’t.

The people of Church & Community make the real difference. As difficult as it is to arrange a funeral for a loved one, when a family chooses Church & Community they can count on being greeted by a friendly face and being served in a sensitive manner. It is our goal to help ease some of the stress of making decisions under such strong emotions.

David Shirley provides the direction and leadership for Church & Community and has been personally serving families throughout Indianapolis for nearly 20 years. When you meet him you will sense his desire to provide families with flexibility and the opportunity to choose where the funeral services will be held. He puts it this way, “Each generation wants to pass along the traditions and treasured memories of their loved one in a way that that will be meaningful both to their family and friends. At Church & Community we want families to choose a place that is familiar ~ where the environment and atmosphere really helps them reflect upon their most treasured memories.”

The idea of having funeral services in churches and community centers is not new. But it has ceased to be the accepted practice or even encouraged by funeral professionals. Church & Community is different. We encourage families to consider all of their options and make decisions based on what is truly important to them.
